BSPN delivered the refurbishment of Wollongbar Tavern, creating a contemporary hospitality venue that responds directly to its unique hinterland setting. The design goes beyond a traditional fitout, establishing a strong connection between the built environment, the surrounding landscape and the local community.
At the core of the project is a design language grounded in the Northern Rivers context. A palette of soft, earthy tones, including muted greens, sandy neutrals and warm timber hues, reflects the surrounding hills and natural terrain. This is reinforced through the use of natural materials such as timber, stone and cane, alongside botanical patterns and organic textures that reference the local landscape.
A key design move was to create a seamless relationship between interior and exterior spaces. Carefully planned transitions between dining areas, bar zones and outdoor terraces allow for a natural flow throughout the venue, supported by integrated planting that strengthens the visual and sensory connection to nature.
The spatial experience draws inspiration from the region’s topography, with subtle level changes, varied ceiling heights and material transitions reflecting the rise and fall of the surrounding land. This creates a layered and immersive environment that feels both grounded and authentic.
Beyond its physical design, the tavern plays an important role as a community anchor. It provides a welcoming and inclusive space for gathering, reinforcing a sense of identity, belonging and connection for local residents.
The result is a cohesive and context-driven venue that celebrates its setting, strengthens community connection and delivers a contemporary hospitality experience.
