Moonee Ponds West Primary School

Balancing heritage restoration with contemporary learning to create a vibrant and connected school environment.

The redevelopment of Moonee Ponds West Primary School was delivered through a carefully considered approach that balances heritage restoration with contemporary educational design.

The project involved the restoration and modernisation of the heritage-listed Infant (Hall) Building and Library Wing, alongside upgrades to the gymnasium, new outdoor learning environments, and the creation of a central courtyard and adventure play spaces.

Heritage preservation was a key driver of the design, with the Hall Building listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. BSPN worked to enhance original architectural elements while reimagining internal spaces to support contemporary teaching methods. New openings, integrated joinery and internal glazing improve visual and physical connectivity, enabling collaboration across learning areas while maintaining the integrity of the original structure.

The reimagined library, now known as the “Curiosity Centre”, acts as a central hub for cross-disciplinary learning. Designed in close collaboration with students and staff, the space supports a variety of activities through flexible zones including tiered seating, reading areas and project-based workspaces.

A strong focus on landscape and play complements the built form. The new courtyard is centred around the concept of a local butterfly, which translates to “Bullum Bullum”. This concept was developed through consultation with the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation and provides a vibrant and inclusive space for movement, interaction and exploration.

Extensive stakeholder engagement underpinned the project, ensuring the needs of students and staff were embedded throughout the design process. The result is a cohesive and engaging school environment that celebrates its heritage while supporting contemporary learning, creativity and wellbeing.
