Hotel Commonwealth

A celebration of history through the thoughtful revival of a 1910 landmark.

This project is conceived as a “Celebration of History,” drawing on joinery and finishes that respectfully echo the Colonial era of the hotel’s original establishment in 1910. The retained fabric of the building, its raw brickwork, aged plaster, and patina, has been deliberately preserved, creating a rich dialogue with refined contemporary insertions.

The original hotel on Union Place forms the formal entry, opening into a two-storey dining space defined by a striking vertical void. This is activated by a dramatic lighting installation that visually connects both levels and anchors the venue. The interior flows seamlessly into an expansive covered beer garden, while a lower level accommodates a gaming lounge, back-of-house areas, and essential storage.

Distinct zones are articulated through materiality: a dark, moody main bar with blackened timber and brass accents contrasts with the light, fresh outdoor dining area, while the gaming lounge interprets a “Rivers of Gold” theme through subtle art deco detailing.

Balancing heritage preservation with contemporary performance, the project integrates modern services and amenities while honouring the building’s past, creating a vibrant, layered destination within the Ipswich precinct.
